Craig Silvey Pleaded Guilty. Then Published A 9000-Word ‘Apology’.
Episode
Yesterday was a big day in Australia. You may or may not have known that it was the Melbourne Cup and there's a specific link between King Charles and Bec Judd that has them not as worried about the interest rates rise as the rest of us. On Monday, author Craig Silvey was sentenced to seven months in prison. The same day, he published a 9,000-word ‘apology’ on Substack. We unpack what's in it, what's missing from it and how he was even able to publish it. Plus, last year we were all told to ‘Let Them’. Now, a character on Nobody Wants This says we should ‘Make Them’. We ask why men and women are given such different self-help advice. Also, Kim Kardashian's authorised biography is out, and Holly has a question: if someone wrote the story of your life, what would you make them take out? If you have experienced sexual assault and are in need of support, please call 1800 RESPECT on 1800 737 732. Help is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Jennifer Lawrence has launched a hair care line called Mes°, and she’s told the world she wants to be a “sexy mum at drop off”. Amelia had to do some serious soul-searching to work out why she’s so furious about it. Jessie thinks we only have ourselves to blame, and Holly needs a word invented for one very specific feeling. Plus, how many tins of baked beans are in your pantry right now? Amelia found out who started the stockpiling panic and we explain why most of it can be ignored. Also, a husband-and-wife podcast, a portrait tattoo and an old clip that has aged very badly. Jessie explains the H3 cheating scandal to two people who have never heard of it. Plus Martha Stewart has issued a statement about her Halloween costume. It is not an apology. It’s so Martha. Should you love your partner exactly as much as they love you? Holly, Jessie and Em can’t agree, and one of them has a bedtime ritual that might settle it. Then they name the famous couples who aren’t quite equally in love. All speculation of course. Tom and Zendaya, we're looking at you. Plus, it started with an Amazon dish rack and a broken wine glass, and ended with a 30-part TikTok series and nine million views. Em unpacks the New York roommate war the internet couldn’t stop picking sides on, and Holly reveals some of the wild stories of her old sharehouse. Also, Taylor Swift says Brad Paisley once released thousands of live crickets onto her tour bus. Jessie has questions about men and pranks. And, in this week’s reccos, a TV show that’s almost too obvious to recommend (but we couldn’t help ourselves), a book people keep thinking is full of typos and a hair product Em didn’t know she needed. Out Louders, Dr Carter from ER is all grown up and officially the Sexiest Man Alive. Em Vernem has the tea on how the winner actually gets chosen, and it starts with a very grumpy Mel Gibson. Was Noah Wyle your pick, or was someone robbed? Plus, Holly Wainwright saw her first “word of the year” post this week and felt her neck tense up. It isn’t even November and Christmas decorations are already on sale. We ask why this is the exact week the end-of-year panic sets in. Also, indoor skydiving, trampoline parks, adult LEGO and now... petting zoos? One Mumsnet mum reckons grown-ups are taking over kids’ days out, and she’s not happy about it. Em will be patting the baby goat regardless. And Meghan is coming back to film Junior MasterChef. If she’s in Melbourne for a few weeks, where is she living? Toorak is the early favourite. Mia asked whether two of her kids’ friends were dating. The answer? No, they’re “talking”. Em and Keeshia try to explain the difference between talking, hooking up and dating, and somehow make it worse. Plus, Keeshia confesses she’s the friend who never checks in. With the internet now saying that’s a red flag; she's asking whether the weekly “how are you?” text is a kindness or really a chore? Today, each of our three hosts brings a dilemma to the table. We’re woefully unqualified, but we give it a red hot go. We’re so excited to be selected for Apple Podcasts Creators We Love, which recognises people who are trailblazers and leaders in podcasting. For years, the most damning thing anyone could say about Meghan Markle was that she doesn’t speak to her dad. This week, that story took a very dark turn. Holly, Jessie and Amelia unpack the allegations against Thomas Markle (which he denies), Meghan’s response and the role the tabloids have played in all of this. Plus, if you’re having a rubbish start to the week, it could be because Mercury is now in retrograde in Scorpio! If that sentence gave you the maths-lady meme face, Amelia explains why the next ten days could change the world. Also, Leigh Campbell, host of You Beauty, posted a very serious Instagram carousel over the weekend announcing a big life decision. We break down our thoughts. And, Margot Robbie is back on Ramsay Street. Sort of. Yes even though Neighbours has vanished from our screens, it seems it could be coming back in a very different way. Plus, if you’re in our wonderful Mamamia Outlouders Facebook group, Holly wants to have a chat… If you or anyone you know needs expert help, please contact 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) — the National Sexual Assault, Domestic and Family Violence Counselling Service. Somewhere on Lily Allen’s tour schedule, between soundcheck and emails, was “test butt plug”. Holly unpacks the new merch and asks whether celebrity sex toys are still smart business, or just the new perfume. Plus, Jessie makes the case against being nice. Is keeping the peace quietly wrecking our relationships? Also, the questions to ask your friends if you actually want to know them better, and why one of them is a slippery slope. “Thank you, you lovely people. I appreciate your help.” Those were reportedly Helen Haines’s first words to the strangers who ran to her aid outside her Wangaratta office on Monday. Jessie, Mia and Holly reflect on the woman, described by all sides of politics as the best of us, on the strangers who ran to help her, and on what female politicians are now saying about their safety. Our love goes to Helen and her family. Also, Russell Brand is on trial in London, and he and his wife Laura are posting about it every day. Holly unpacks why Britain can’t look away. Plus, forget the postcode. Mia is backing a theory that what decides how happy you are is everything within ten minutes of your front door. And, Prince Harry sat down with GQ and used the word “reconcile”. Holly nearly broke a thumb clicking. Who gets custody of the pet social account? And are Millie and Bug even dogs? Plus, Holly and Jessie discuss the rise of the collab breakup post, and the one detail that tells you a split is anything but amicable. Also, Tobey Maguire stands at the altar at his ex-wife’s wedding, as the officiant. Is there a statute of limitations on being friends with your ex? Andy Lee and Bec Harding were together 12 years before they married in New York on the weekend, and Holly Wainwright isn’t mad, she’s just disappointed. Plus, a man online says it’s rude NOT to ask to stay at a friend’s place when you’re in their city. Holly, Jessie and Amelia draw up the houseguest rules, right down to who strips the bed. Also, Amelia unpacks what’s really happening on the streets of France, and how Pope Leo handled a phone call from Vladimir Putin three days after surgery. And, three cookbooks made the list of Australia’s top 100 books. Jessie wants to know if a cookbook even counts, and what to make of the influencers who say they've never read a book. What actually is perimenopause, and how would you know if you’re in it? Outlouders, we’re popping into your feed on a Sunday for a very important conversation: a special Out Loud episode, where we're talking perimenopause and menopause. Amelia Lester, Mia Freedman, Holly Wainwright, Jessie Stephens and Leigh Campbell are five women at three life stages, from 35 and seven months postpartum to 55 and on the other side of menopause. One of us forgot what year it was this morning. Another questioned whether 'rage' could be added to a list of possible symptoms or whether people actually were being a lot more irritating! You’ll hear why perimenopause can look like a pile of unrelated symptoms, right up until it doesn’t, and why so many women blame themselves for not recognising symptoms they didn’t know were connected. Plus, what the “Wonder Woman era” really means, the sleep that vanished overnight, the skincare that stopped loving them back and the brain fog that sent Leigh downstairs chanting “yoghurt”. And, the upside nobody mentions, what the women who’ve been through it wish they’d known sooner and the one step everyone at the table says made the difference. For evidence-based health information about perimenopause and menopause, head to health.gov.au/perimenopause This episode has been created in partnership with the Australian Government. We want to hear from you! Take our quick 3-minute survey for your chance to win a $1,000 gift card. You can now watch our show in full length video on the Apple Podcast app or on Youtube. Would you ask a date what they earn? A BBC piece found plenty of people who’d rather not, but Em Vernem has a strict rule she adheres to — Holly's Britishness hates it. Also, quiet quitting is over. Loud working, with emails scheduled for 2am, is the new survival strategy. And the new Rules of Rudeness. If you bring a bottle of wine to a friend’s house, are you allowed to drink it? Jessie Stephens and Holly Wainwright can't agree, and it’s just one of the social rules nobody explained to us. Holly has gone off small talk. Nobody else has. Plus, Jessie Stephens needs Halloween costume ideas for her twins. Please give us your cutest suggestions in the Outlouders Facebook group! Our favourite freelance royal Prince Harry is teaching a masterclass in grief, and he’s being paid for it. If everyone from the brother to the butler has made money off Diana, why not her son? Jessie has a theory, and Mia has a number. Plus a comedian has walked onto one of the biggest stages in American TV and announced that women at the gym now dress like wh*res. Shane Gillis hosted Saturday Night Live, and Jessie has watched the whole monologue - and thinks it’s worse in context. Then the female comics of the world answered him, and Holly says he’s fair game. Mia is watching a reality show she doesn’t even like. It has something in common with the Matildas, the Eras Tour and a funeral. And, Girls is coming back. Same girls, now 40. If you want to check out these amazing female comedians that we celebrated in today's show - here is where to find them - Kyla Cobbler, Rachel Parris, Katherine Ryan and Cassie Willson. Mary Fowler pulled out of two Matildas games and flew home, reportedly to be with her injured partner Nathan Cleary. Good on her, or did she let the team down? Em, freshly back from Cambodia, brings Holly and Jessie the sport story everyone has an opinion on. And would the conversation be different if it were Cleary? Plus, Kelly Clarkson walked into a Brooklyn curiosity shop, asked about a singing mechanical bird and walked out feeling like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Holly and Em perform a dramatic reading of the feud that followed on X. Who’s in the right? And is a mechanical bird really worth all this? A 50-year-old woman woke up in a hospital bed last week, angry and confused, because her execution didn’t work. Jessie unpacks the Christa Pike case, and Holly has questions about the Pentagon’s plan livestream the next one. Stand on the edge of the photo, please, so we can crop you out later. One woman has been getting that treatment from her in-laws for 30 years, and Mia, who is Jessie Stephens’ mother-in-law, wants to talk about it. Jessie is surprisingly understanding. Also, the boss of Signal refused to play along with a BBC quickfire round, and Holly is worried our feeds have trained us to want real-life conversations on 2x speed. And, Shanghai has put timers on its public toilets. Mia reckons she’d win. MOVE is feel-good fitness by Mamamia. Taylor Swift promised Life of a Showgirl was 12 bangers, no extras. Then came The Encore. Mia has a theory about why Taylor keeps doubling down and what it might have to do with an Oscar, while Holly asks whether it's sexist to want Taylor to have a little lie down and let us miss her. Plus, Jessie has been manipulated into bringing Meghan news and she arrives with four juicy tidbits, including the pub that allegedly refused to serve the Duchess (and her controversial order - well, it surprised us). Plus Mia and Holly disagree about a Sussex Pap Walk. And, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is back. He's suing the police and the Norfolk gentry are inviting him to kitchen suppers. Outlouders, we’ve unlocked an exclusive subscriber episode for your long weekend listening pleasure. You're welcome. Enjoy! When did you realise you were an adult? Not a specific age - but the moment you're suddenly the one who's supposed to know what to do. There's an essay doing the rounds arguing adults don't actually exist and we're all just winging it, some of us with better posture. So what actually defines an adult? Is it knowing the right thing to do or just being the one willing to do it, even when you'd rather not? And if nobody really has it figured out, what's the risk in admitting that out loud? Plus, Holly, Mia and Em on the exact moment each of them realised: oh, it's me. I'm the adult. Breast milk fountains have hit the runway and for someone who self-identifies as ‘not a fashion girlie’, Jessie Stephens has never been more on trend. Holly's algorithm has decided it’s time for her to bounce up and down in fitted lycra. We question if it’s ever okay to film during an exercise class and shared some lived experiences that could be used as evidence for why the answer to that question should be ‘no’. Plus, two years on, the ‘Cornell Seven’ case has been reopened. A civil lawsuit, a reopened investigation and a fraternity group chat have women around the world furious, and Jessie Stephens asks why this story has struck such a nerve. Please note, this segment discusses sexual violence. Also, one of the smartest women in the world has a problem with the phrase "I really love reading". We speak about whether ‘reading’ is a hobby and if Mary Beard has a point, or if this is snobby and purist, and puts up a barrier to entry for non-avid readers. Outlouders, enjoy this free taster of Jessie Stephens, Emily Vernem & Holly Wainwright on our subscriber-only episode. You can listen to the full conversation here: The Victoria Beckham C-word Investigation It's Tuesday, which means gossip we probably shouldn't be enjoying this much. There is a rumour that Taylor Swift invented her own award at the VMAs, then acted surprised when she won it. Wild if true. Em unpacks it for us and details what happens when Taylor and Charli XCX end up at the same show after writing diss tracks about each other. Plus, Holly details the joke that got comedian Katherine Ryan investigated by the BBC after two very influential viewers complained about what she called Victoria Beckham. Is it ever OK to call another woman the C-word? One of us has an answer involving a pub and a stranger who won't be barging into anyone again. And Jessie has the story of Orlando Bloom, real-life sisters Rooney and Kate Mara and a very awkward intimacy scene. Is it just acting, or has someone crossed a line? 814 hours. That's how much extra care two full time working parents of primary schoolers need to find every year to cover the gap between school hours, school holidays and the working week. We discuss Georgie Dent’s speech that just about every parent shared last week. Should you pay a friend back for a cup of coffee? One writer argues nobody should ask a friend to pay them back for anything under $15. Also, Taylor Swift seems to have entered her ‘wife’ era. She has some new songs out, she’s proudly shouting about who her husband is but we somehow end this segment shouting about joint tax returns. And, Kylie Minogue took over the AFL Grand Final with a bunch of other iconic Australian musos. As incredible as Kylie was, it was also the moment that Holly realised she had a parenting fail. A few weeks ago, Holly recommended an episode of Mamamia’s Gen X podcast, Unleashed, and we’re bringing it to the Outlouders feed. If you haven’t listened before, Unleashed is a podcast for Gen X women who need a laugh, a chat and sometimes a space for the harder parts of life. Unleashed co-host Dr Ginni Mansberg recently shared the deeply personal story of her mum’s decision to choose voluntary assisted dying. Ginni wanted to talk about what was happening with her family, but we wanted to give her the space to tell the story not just as a doctor, but most importantly, as a daughter. This is part one of a three-part series, beginning one month before Ginni’s mum’s death. Listen to part two and part three here. Please take care while listening. This episode discusses voluntary assisted dying, death and grief. If this conversation brought up hard feelings and you need some help, please call Lifeline here. In your ears today is Cath Mahoney, Bruna Papandrea and Ginni Mansberg Check out our Unleashed music playlist for some feel good throwbacks! There’s a skit going viral about Harry and Meghan that has people divided on whether it’s a little bit funny or a little bit mean. An AI researcher quit his job last week and told us that the people building this stuff genuinely believe it could kill us all within the decade. Amelia explains what the whistleblowers are calling for and why "just regulate it" might not be the easy fix everyone assumes. Plus Holly's making the case for 'hopepunk' - why choosing hope right now might be the most rebellious thing you can do. Borrowing from Caitlin Moran and Nick Cave, we explore how you can actually change anything in a world this broken, and why giving up isn't an option. Also, Sydney Sweeney's new ad for a sports betting app has her straddling a basketball hoop naked, and it has united female athletes around the world. They’re furious. We unpack why women in sport feel it’s pushed us backwards and whether the ad is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Are Aussies anti bush? Not the former president, the bikini kind. A viral essay asked why nobody blinked when a writer wore hers to the beach, and Em wants to know whether Australia is culturally anti-bush while America is having a big bush renaissance (a bush-enaissance if you allow). Would you post about it if your partner killed the family pet? A well-known content creator told her 1.8 million followers that her husband had killed the injured bird they were nursing back to health, and the internet unanimously said the same thing: leave him. But is it actually that simple, or is there a difference between the line you'd draw with your partner and the line you'd draw with a friend? Plus, one of the biggest names on the internet has just quietly ended a show she's been running for 12 years, and Em thinks she's stopped too soon. And therapy is over-rated! Jessie Stephens, co-host of Mamamia Out Loud and bestselling author, sits down with Kate Langbroek for a completely candid conversation about the last six months of her life. Ten weeks early, on the day she finished up for maternity leave, Jessie gave birth to twins Margot and Harry, while at home raising her toddler daughter, Luna. Jessie opens up about something she's never spoken about publicly before, a moment in NICU when she found herself in what she describes as "a really dark place." She also talks about growing up an identical twin, falling for her now husband Luca while they worked together, and building a marriage and family and a career when it's all intertwined. Jessie will be back on Mamamia Out Loud in September. Want to listen before everyone else? Outside a Massachusetts courtroom, women have travelled across the country to hold signs that read "she needed help". Jessie Stephens unpacks forensic fandom — the internet's habit of working a real trial as if it’s a season of Lost — and why those signs might not be about Lindsay Clancy at all. Plus, Holly Wainwright is back from holidaying in Harry and Meghan’s new home and has a surprising (for her) new take. Also, Married at First Sight is reportedly going sober, drastically cutting its alcohol rules after a series of scandals. Jessie has thoughts about whether a show built on a hand grenade survives without one.
